How to remove Spyware Protect 2009
Monday, December 29th, 2008 at 4:30 amSpyware Protect 2009 description
Spyware Protect 2009 comes on a computer with a single purpose: to get your money and possibly hijack your online banking account. SpywareProtect 2009 is presented as anti-spyware as you may guess by reading its name. Spyware Protect 2009 is not anti-spyware although it is able to mimic some actions performed by security applications.
Spyware Protect 2009 imitates computer scan and offers deleting supposedly detected threats after you pay for a full version. That’s the trap: SpywareProtect2009 reports fake threats to sell nonexistent licensed version.
Spyware Protect 2009 loads plenty of pop-ups and hijacks web browser. It usually generates the following messages: “Critical System Error”, “Windows Security alert” and “Your computer is infected”:
“Windows Security alert
Windows reports that computer is infected. Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Click here for the scan you computer. Your system might be at risk now.”
Spyware Protect2009 is installed by trojans and Conficker.E worm. Click here to remove Conficker.E.
Spyware Protect 2009 spreads via fake online scanners and fake online security centers like spy-protec.com. Some of those websites may even hijack a web browser:

Hello Theo,
I’m glad to know you’ve fixed your computer.
Unfortunately, scammers like those who created Spyware Protect 2009 hide pretty well. They don’t provide their contact information on their websites and if they do, the information is counterfeit. That’s why fighting these people is so hard.

too bad they haven’t tried to scam the Teamsters website. If they did, not only would they be found but they would be “taken care of.” Believe it.

I don’t know how to thank you enough. Last night this virus popped up on my computer completely out of the blue; I hadn’t downloaded anything and was merely web-surfing. Then I found this site via Yahoo answers, followed the directions, and now my computer’s free again. Thank you so much for this!

Hello zack,
Have you tried the manual removal of Spyware Protect 2009? The infection is pretty annoying and it’s the most possible reason for the internet problem you got.

Sweet this seemed to have worked for me! Thanks a ton. Although I did have to remove a registry and end a process that were similar to those listed, but not identical. they were:
“sysguard.exe” and “sysguard” registry

I found those files as well without finding any of the others. I did an ad-aware anti-spyware scan too, and apparently those files remained in my PC.
P.S.
In retrospection, the only thing I can even remotly think of that may have been the reason for getting infected would have been an “IQ test” from Youtube (or where it was advertised anyways). It wasn’t a real IQ test, it was rather a scam.

If you actually did pay these guys, couldn’t your bank track where the payment is going? That’s a start. Somebody should hire a private detective to locate these guys, publish the address to the rest of us, so we can thank them in person.

i, too, encountered this problem. i am not about to purchase something i have never heard of, after knowing Spyware Protect 2009 is a rogue antispiware program designed to hack online bank accounts. how do i know that this “Spyware Doctor” is not the same thing? i cannot trust any antispyware programs that i can only purchase online via full and direct disclosure of credit card information. so PLEASE someone help me defeat this problem because i also do not feel comfortable tampering with programs and processes and things that could possibly cause my computer to crash.

If you’re not sure about downloading any security program, you can either delete Spyware Protect 2009 manually or you can format hard drives and reinstall Windows operating system. Both methods are equally helpful in your situation.
Spyware Doctor is a very reputable anti-spyware. I know talks like that may look suspicious since rogue security programs have plenty of websites with almost identical praises. I recommend you reading how to recognize rogue security program article.
You don’t really need Spyware Doctor to remove SpywareProtect infection; you can simply delete this malware manually.

Hello Deanna,
You don’t really need to have internet connection to remove this threat. You can print the manual removal instructions at friend’s and use them to delete Spyware Protect 2009. Since the infection blocks your task manager, i recommend running a computer in a safe mode. Most of malicious processes are inactive in a safe mode so you will be able to defeat them.

I didn’t find any of the processes listed above, but I located and stopped sysguard. This finally allowed me to access the internet. Next I located the registry files, but am unsure how to handle them. The instrutions say to assign another value to them, but what value? Do I just delete them? Help!

I followed instructions above but the only file I had on my computer was the ones starting with ’sysguard’ – no ‘N’. I deleted the process, the registry entry and the file that started with ’sysguard’ and the pest is gone! I also blocked the three sites mentioned above. Hope this helps.

If you are neither interested in the manual removal nor Spyware Doctor, you can use other anti-spyware products or you can format hard drives and re-install Windows.

February 12th, 2009 at 2:19 am

My Pc has just got infected with this spyware/virus. I performed all the steps for manual removal, and also scanned with Super Antispyware and another anti-spyware program for good measure. However after all this, i still experienced the following:
- internet connection broken (even ipconfig seemed to go crazy, as it returned *nothing*)
- Google Chrome crashes immediately on startup
- many of my applications crash on startup (e.g. Nero, Media Player Classic, etc…)
- no audio
- other memory violation messages from svchost.exe, even in safe mode, all threatening to shut down my computer within 60 seconds once i click the OK button
- all executables on my PC + external drives got infected with a virus called Win32something (forgot the exact name) which eventually caused my McAfee virus scanner to delete all executables from my system (including system ones) resulting in an entire mess and a completely unusable PC!
This of course left me with no option but to reformat.
I’m only saying this here so that everyone is aware of how serious this thing is!

Spyware Protect 2009 doesn’t cause the things you’ve described. Apparently, your computer was infected with more malwares and viruses than just spywareprotect.
February 12th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
i dont believe Spyware Doctor is a scam because ever since in downloaded it the SWP2009 popups stopped. and i think SWP2009 went away by itself because i havent done anything but block the sites and download the Spyware Doctor program. i dont see any sign of it on my computer anymore. i didnt even use Spyware Doctor so i dont know what did it haha im just really happy its gone.
February 12th, 2009 at 3:52 pm

The program might be not running at the moment. There’s also a possibility that Spyware Protect 2009 installed files that are different from the ones described on the manual removal guide. Unfortunately, malwares mutate and evolve and SpywareProtect 2009 we tested might be different from the one on your machine. I recommend proceeding with the manual removal without killing the processes.

For anyone out there who is experiencing problems with Spyware Protect Alert 2009. I called technical support at Toshiba (I own a Satellite Laptop) earlier today and the technical support person recommended a Malware detection and removal program, Spyware Doctor. I paid for and downloaded Spyware Doctor, and though it did quarrantine (and remove) some low to mid-level bugs, it did NOT do anything regarding Spyware Protect 2009. I re-booted my computer and it is still there. I am in no mood to do a system recovery on my laptop- I have done 3 already in the last week and I still can’t get rid of this bugger. If anyone can respond and give me some suggestions on this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again.

Unfortunately, in some cases malwares like Spyware Protect 2009 are able to block security programs. That most likely happened in your case. I recommend rebooting your computer in a safe mode and giving Spyware Doctor another chance. If that doesn’t work, manual removal is your best choice.
You say system recovery hadn’t helped you. If it’s system restore you did, then it wasn’t supposed to help. You need to format the drives and reinstall operating system to make things work again.

Boot your computer in a safe mode. Most of malware activities can’t function in a safe mode so you will be able to fight the infection.

Luciana, I was able to successfully remove Spyware Protect 2009 from my computer. I tried to manually remove the processes, etc. (via your brief tutorial). I deleted the folder that contained all the processes you listed. I re-booted my computer. After re-booting the Spyware Protect 2009 was gone. However, my computer was running like crap and I was still recieving pop ups from porn site, gambling sites, viagra, etc. . . . So, I uninstalled Spyware Doctor, re-booted again and now my computer is running like it did before the Spyware Protect virus. However, I am still occasionally recieving those pesky pop-ups- I turned up my pop-up filter to reject virtually every pop up, but it is to no avail. Oh well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.
Thanks again for your response and for all the information you provided here.

Hey, I don’t know how to put the IP address on there in the first step with Notepad. I have no idea what IP addresses are!
And in step 2, none of those processes were on my computer, does that mean that they are under new names now?
In step 3, do I have to delete the AVscan folder itself or just the files inside?
Sorry for the 20 questions, I’m just inept when it comes to this part of computers…. Thanks.

Katie, simply open the HOSTS file and type 127.0.0.1 for IP address and then the address of the malicious website. And then save the changes you made. It’s all it takes.
If you couldn’t find the processes described on the manual removal, there is a chance that they are named differently on your computer. there’s also a chance that the processes weren’t running at the moment. Don’t worry and follow other steps of the manual removal guide.
You can delete the folder.
Let us know if you need further help.

If you meant Spyware Protect 2009 when you were referring to “Malware Protect”, you should know that Spyware Protect is a scam and a computer parasite. Please, boot your computer in a safe mode and follow the manual removal guide .

Nooo. I didn’t INTENTIONALLY Download Spyware Protect 2009. It Just popped up onto my computer when I was typing out a document. I wasn’t even downloading Anything. It attacked me. I was saying I downloaded that little bit provided above. Spyware Doctor, I believe it’s called.

How to manually get rid of Spyware Protect 2009…..
These instructions worked for me, one thing I noticed was sysguardn couldn’t be found, but there was a registry entry by the name of sysguard and a file named sysguard in the windows folder.
thanks for the post.

I did download your recommended “spyware protect 2009 removal tool” and it came out with “sdsetup.exe”. I press double click to that folder, then nothing shown, no run, still pop up. What can I do to solve this problem?

There’s a chance that Spyware Protect 2009 blocks security tools. This happens quite often. Boot your computer in a safe mode and then run Spyware Doctor. Most of malwares are inactive in a safe mode so you should be able to run antispyware.

sorry for having question again.
How to handle this issue? I did remove sysguardn.exe from window task manager.
Is it all the thing that I should do?

You also need to delete malicious registry entries and malicious files. You said you have Spyware Doctor in your previous comment. If you run Spyware Doctor in a safe mode, it will remove Spyware Protect 2009 for you.

If this spyware doctor is supposed to be free, then why does it prompt me to purchase it after it detects the spyware??? If theres a free feature, they sure hid it well. They could have at least informed me in the beginning that I needed a “registered version” instead of having me run the program for an hour.
Can someone please tell me if I’m doing something wrong, or did everyone who had success make the purchase?

The trial version of Spyware Doctor is free and the full version is paid. Please, contact Spyware Doctor support if you have problems with activating the full version.

I’ve come across a couple of computers that have been infected with spyguard/sysguard and the like. The weird part is that someone is packing it into another really nasty virus that auto DL’s the malware back onto the machines after ( what i thought ) a full clean.
keep your eyes open! great site guys!
February 28th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Thanks for your help. Looks like the stupid thing is gone…
I followed your steps to the detail, but it didn’t work.
A couple of the bloggers mentioned ’sysguard’, without the ‘n’. I deleted the process, registry, and files that contained ’sysguard’ and it worked.
thanks again everyone

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I’m 13, and I am on my School computer, And when I called the School’s Tech support they could do NOTHING. I reccomend going to Google and downloading a free program called Hijackthis and another called Malwarebytes AntiMalware. They don’t find SpywareProtect2009 but they help remove some of it’s procceses. I could not use the SdSetup.exe because My school Admin. Blocks all unknown programs. Apparently SdSetup.exe registers in as one of them. But I followed the Manual instructions instead, and so far, It’s working like a charm. I already had deleted the procceses on my own, but I did not know about the Sites and the WIN32 System files that were infected. Though, I am still haveing a problem…When I boot my computer up, I get an error message somewhat like this, Usually I get two of ‘em, But today I only got one. Here it is: Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\Yayutoto.dll Thanks for the help.

I’m glad you were able to fix your computer. Unfortunately, you need administrator rights to remove malwares properly. Please, leave this matter for the tech support of your school.

THANK YOU!!!! I had to manuallly delete things myself; it had the name sysguard. Getting it out of the registry seemed the biggest help – once i did that, Mcaffee started sending me messages about trojans that it was deleting.

Stopping the processes is not enough. You also need to delete the files and malicious registries. Just follow the manual removal tutorial step by step.

Hi, I recently got infected with the Spyware Protect 2009 program and it completely hijacked my computer. I cannot go to any sites, and every anti-malware program I used it blocked including Malwarebytes, Spyhunter, and Spybot. I haven’t tried manually deleting the files, but I will when I get home. Is there an anti-malware program I can use to delete it without getting blocked?

Try running anti-spyware scan in a safe mode.

Thank you for your help! Have a couple questions about the manual process.
You said “locate and delete Spyware Protect 2009 Registry entries”. Do I delete every item that comes up under AV Scan? I deleted the ones I saw on the list in the instructions. I had 4 that were not on the list. (WINDOWSready, WINDOWSsalrtybek, WINDOWSdefault, and WINDOWSid) Left them alone.
Do I delete everything I find when I go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun? I only found 7 items there and deleted only the sysguard.exe one.
I guess I’m not sure how to “detect and delete other Spyware Protect 2009 Files as the next step tells me to do.
Also, when I launch safe mode, it asks if I want to enter as the administrator or as the user. Does it matter which?
Thanks again for your help. Spyware Protect 2009 is a royal pain and the “fix” process is quite daunting for a computer novice like myself. I appreciate any help you can lend.

Please follow the manual removal guide precisely as it is written. We update the instructions frequently. Avoid deleting files and registry entries just because they look suspicious to you; you may easily delete useful things.

Restart your computer and press F8 while the machine is still booting. You will see an option to boot a computer in a safe mode.

Hi! Um, I JUST got attacked w/ Spyware Protect 2009 today just browsing a site that I normally go to visit. For the past 20 minutes, I’ve been trying to get rid of it. I’ve tried doing it manually, blocking all those sites & in the task manger, I was only able to find spywareprotect and it got rid of it in my bottom toolbar / taskbar. However, the last 3 tasks, I wasn’t able to do because I couldn’t find it anywhere *maybe it’s under a different name?*
BUT… my PC isn’t displaying anything about SP2009 or anything, however it’s still quite slow (but then again, it may be my Internet connection that’s been acting up lately) and I downloaded the spyware removal program you guys offered, but I’m unable to open up “setup.” Even though I didn’t complete all the tasks, is it possible it’s gone??? I want to be sure, because I really feel uncomfortable w/ a trojan on my PC.

I strongly recommend running an anti-spyware scan. You may have a trojan or adware which “advertises” Spyware Protect 2009 instead of Spyware Protect 2009 itself.

Never mind, never mind! Ignore my last comment. I went back looking for the registry keys and found it. Only 1 problem, the name of 1 of the registry keys is “system tools,” however it’s data is “C:/WINDOWS/sysguard.exe.” Is this wise to delete it even though it’s actual name is different?

Please avoid deleting files that are not mentioned in the manual removal guide. You may easily end up deleting files and registry entries that are useful and vital for a computer to run properly.

This is a good tutorial I deleted sysguard.exe from my windows folder and some sysguard registries, but i did delete some other registries in AVSCAN without backing them up, now when I try to run my computer normally it just freezes when it says “loading your personal settings” did I make a mistake when I deleted some of those registries?
what can I do?
(Also. it works fine in safe mode, no internet or anything though)
p.s. I also just tried to do a system restore but that doesn’t work either

These problems are not caused by SpywareProtect 2009. You most likely deleted useful registry entries. Reinstalling operating system is your best shot right now.

WOW….worked like a charm, from p.c. tools, spyware doctor. Cant belive I put up with that for a day and a half.

Make sure you remove every malicious file installed by Spyware Protect 2009. The malware may be reinstalled by trojans and other infections. If you removed SpywareProtect but the trojans are still there, there’s no surprise you got infected again. I recommend running anti-spyware scan to erase all the infections from your pc.

As with many others, I woke up, booted up my computer…got some coffee. Came back to my computer and there goes this stupid fake remover system doing it’s fake scans and popups. Through another site, I found out I should terminate the processes and delete all files containing sysguard. So I did. And then the popups stopped and I thought everything was ok. But it’s not, because my internet is still hijacked, so I couldn’t even download (or afford) the Doctor if I wanted. It will let me open firefox, but none of the webpages load (except for Yahoo which is really weird)/ Searching my registry files/WINDOWS files and task manager with any of the names mentioned above isn’t bringing up anything. AVG doesn’t bring up anything when I scan with it. Is there ANYthing else I can do before I have to reformat? I’d really like to avoid that, thanks in advance.

AVG may be great at deleting viruses, but Spyware Protect 2009 is different type of computer infections. You need anti-spyware to deal with this.

The information provided help me out. However, I’m confused about the registry part. I found the location of the file but am at a lost when following the steps. A little help here. I deleted the Sys in task manager but its still on my computer.
