Total Security description

Total Security is a successor of Total VirusProtection tool (learn how to remove Total Virus Protection). Since TotalSecurity is a clone of rogue program, you shouldn’t expect it to function properly.

The newer version of this malware named Total Security 2009 is even more pesky. Click here to delete TotalSecurity 2009.

Total Security is typical fraudulent software. It displays large numbers of counterfeit security alerts and it urges people to pay for using the tool. TotalSecurity costs either $49.95 or $79.95 but it’s not worth a dime. The program is nonfunctional unless you’re looking for some tool to halt a pc and to generate annoying pop-ups.

Total Security is able to imitate computer scan. Keep in mind that both the scan and scan report are falsified. TotalSecurity reports are usually full of computer threats; none of the reported infections is real.

Pop-ups loaded by Total Security are identical to security alerts displayed by ESET NOD32 antivirus. Be careful and don’t mistake TotalSecurity for a real security program. Here are some examples of Total Security alerts:

Privacy Violation alert!

    Hello Tom,
Please tell us what options you have already tried, and I’ll be glad to assist you in removing this malware.

    hello,

we have the same problem, but total security is really blocking all application. So i cannot launch the task manager to stop the process you mentionned.

could you please help ? is there anyway to desinstall it ?

    Luciana Reply:

Boot your computer in a safe mode and then follow the manual removal guide. This way Total Security won’t block the removal.

    Hi
I have jujst turned on my computer and realized that total security has installed itself on my PC.

My PC wont allow me to use any of the functions on my PC or applications.

This didn’t work for me either. Total security disabled every program and this doesn’t really works because as soon as I downloaded this it was disabled.

  5. Matt

I have this now too and nothing works. I cant run anything, get blue screen when trying to start in safe mode, every program immediately closes after opened.

  9. Naz

    Hi everyone,
I tried all the above instructions above and nothing worked for me. I tried another way and I was able to remove the darn thing.
You need two people in order to do this effectively, and my computer was NOT in safe mode. One person needs to hold down the ctr+alt+shift keys while the other person holds down the del+enter keys. When you hold down the ctr+alt+del keys, task manager comes up for a millisecond and you are not able to select total security and end the task.
What you need to do is be able to hold down and open task manager while at the same time pressing down the shift button in order to select “end task” and also press down the “enter” key in order to select and stop total security.
We did this about 20+ times and finally we were able to end total security.
    Hope it helps.

    Kev Reply:

    Hey Naz,

Wow. I didn’t even think of just using task manager. Luckily, my computer wasn’t deeply infected (virus didn’t really do damage), so i opened up task manager manually and removed it. But: does it come back?

    Kev

    Naz Reply:

    Hey Kev,
Sorry for the late reply. After I closed it on task manager, I used Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware to remove it and it is gone!!!!

    Carl Reply:

That worked…….but I did it myself….to ctrl+alt+delete..it was easy thanks

  10. Naz

    ******
I meant to say that that one person needs to hold down the ctr+alt+TAB keys (NOT SHIFT) keys while the other person holds down the del+enter keys.

  11. Good Deal

My local newspaper changed its format, and now downlaods all sorts of advertising, such as jobs.com and weight loss programs…after thsi stated happening I became
a victim of Total Security, which has blocked me from using most everything on my puter…even when I downlaoded Norton360 by beating the virus to the install button, it would let Norton update.

I already have Trend Micro, Ad-Aware and AVG, but it prevents me from using those, too

  12. mike

I was infected with Total Security Program. Now I can not even open my internet or access any program like spybot. How can I get rid of this problem??

  13. tom

this is time wasting but it seems to work.

go onto safe mode and just search through folders until you find a file that is similar to 10493204.exe then delete it.

    start again in normal. simple.

  14. Sean

Customers machine got infected. Followed same steps as Rifath and found a folder with a different number but inside was an EXE file called TotalSecurity.exe. Deleted this folder. Also deleted the entry in the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run) that was pointing to the file.

Restarted the machine and it’s going good.

  15. Sonny

I found out that this is the easiest and fastest way to get rid of Total Security 2009

    1. save all data on external hd, picturs, movies, mp3 etc
    2. reinstall windows on that computer and install a real antivirus on your computer.
    3. scan the external drive

    bryan Reply:

Yes it’s the easiest, but not the fastest, cause you have to install all the programs u had before format

  16. Nicole Angels

Naz’s suggestion worked for me and if you press shift 5 times your keys should lock together so you only have to press one key for control.Alt.delete which frees up your fingers for more keys!

  17. Carie

Hello, I am having trouble following these instructions. I have manually blocked the websites, and I am trying to perform the second step. However, I cannot open the task manager button for some strange reason, maybe the spyware’s fault?, and therefore cannot view the processes I need to remove.

    Carie Reply:

Oh and also I did try to get my computer into safe mode, but that doesn’t work! I get the blue screen of death whenever I try…but it’ll let me get on just fine in normal mode. Grrrr….

  18. Nathan

I had the virus a day ago. It’s actually very easy to remove, restart your computer and press f8 and choose the option “Safe mode”. When you log in a window will open saying if you want to work in safe mode or restore your computer to an earlier date, click the restore button and choose a day about a week from when you noticed the spyware. Just follow the on-screen instructions and your computer will be back to normal in about 15 minutes.

Note: I recommend disconnecting any internet connections while the spyware is still active.

  19. darrell morales

I was browsing the web when your software was installed on my work pc. we have a spyware antivirus already. I’m not sure how it got through the popup blocker??? I uninstalled your software but I still get a warning when I go to certain web sites. I WANT THIS CRAP OFF OF MY PC! HOW DO I DO THAT?

    Luciana Reply:

Spywarevoid.com does not distribute Total Security, this website is dedicated to removing fraudulent programs like that. Run antispyware to delete this infection or use the manual removal guide provided above the comments section.

total sercurity is blocking all my aplications how i can download the program to upload total security?

    Luciana Reply:

You can download removal tool on another computer and then copy the install file to the infected PC on a thumb drive.

  21. jake

some how it instaled on its self and i went into control panel removed it but its still there

    Luciana Reply:

Total Security is a malware that’s why you can’t uninstall it like a regular program. I recommend removing this infection manually but you can also run antispyware scan to remove this thing for you.

  22. lynn

I found the easiest and best way to get rid of this adware is to go to:
    –C:/documents and settings/all users/application data.
    – Look for folders with numbers associated with them.
    – Scan with AVG
    — I found that there was an infection in one of the folders,
I did not open the folder– deleted it. I restarted my computer and have not had any further problems.

    Muhammad Reply:

What Lynn suggested worked for me. I did not try the manual option suggested on this page, but I did download the sdsetup.exe from here and ran it and it did not work. So I found the folder named something like 1234… and just deleted it, without scanning with any antivirus. So far so good. I will keep you posted if it comes back to haunt me.

  23. pal

When you boot your pc, immediatley press ctrl+alt+del and access the task manager. Click processes then scroll down to a process which will be a load of random numbers like this 135635864.exe it will also show some CPU activity next to it. click on this then click end process (you have to complete this in about 10 seconds to stop it closing your task manager but if it does just reboot and do it again ) Now after you ended the process all your programs will work so you can run your spyware and remove the thing.

    Bob Reply:

Thanks Pal …. your suggestion worked a treat. many thanks

ok…so this thing has really fucked up my system, man, i’ve tried EVERYTHING i’ve found from all sorts of anti-malware and spyware sites etc., including safe mode and manual removal.

in the manual removal, i cannot find many of the registry entries and other things (winsource.dll etc) associated with material i’ve seen. ok, so i was able to kill the initial process that’s a bunch of numbers (1333346536.exe etc) by getting to the task mgr immediately following startup and ending it before it launched, and then i DID find that registry key and deleted it, soooo it doesn’t come up on startup and i at least don’t have all the messed up actual fake alerts and everything, but my machine still will shut down randomly or randomly not let me access the internet.

i downloaded malware-bytes and it won’t let me run it, even though i renamed the mbam.exe file to iexplore, xxxx.exe, etc. although i DID run AVG full scan, found like 19 threats and removed/deleted them, it still didn’t take care of this. wTF???

i have a feeling that if i could just get malwarebytes to run it might take care of it, but just cant figure out how. i dont have access to another pc right now. any suggestions?

    scott

    pal Reply:

ok so i did the same but also removed a folder (named random numbers) in C:/documents and settings/all users/application data that had total security files in it but noticed there was something dodgy still running in task manager called _ex-08.exe i think it’s some trojan connected with total security. i could end it but it kept coming back when i rebooted so i just system restored to a month ago and it’s all good

  25. scott

also any other tips including other programs than malwarebytes anti-mal that will take care of this that might not be blocked by totalsecurity?

    Luciana Reply:

Any reputable anti-spyware should detect and remove Total Security infection.

    Jackson Reply:

We should not be too quick to blame the anti-spyware. I have seen this Antivirus 360 variant on many systems each with various major anti-spyware brands. If the user is going to click on bogus links no ant-spyware is going to save them forever.

  26. Ellen

I fell for their fake warnings and downloaded it. However, I could never find it anywhere on my computer. I’ve written to them several times and they never respond. In the meantime, I learned it is a fake and harmful program. I think I got rid of any lingering pieces, even though I never saw it’s name anywhere, but my pc is still running a bit slower than usual. I fell for their “lifetime” subscription which means I’m out 99.90 and am having no luck with their “refund” option on their website – never a response. I guess I’m just out the money and grateful it didn’t do more harm.

Is there a place that activity like this can be reported and somehow chased down? They don’t list a location or a phone number, which is also suspicious.

    Luciana Reply:

Total Security is a scam, so there’s no real company behind this. You may contact your bank and try to cancel the payment, but you won’t get a response from scammers.

  27. gladys andino

    i dont whant this service

  28. BooyakaShah

Tried the methods listed in the comments above, and this is what worked for me:
    - Right click the Total Security SHORTCUT on the desktop, and click “Open file location”, of which you’ll be taken to the folder that contains the harmful files (usually an 8 digit folder e.g. mine was 13049832). Click back, and then delete the entire folder that contained the files.

Next, run “regedit” and check the “Software” folder of ALL the folders (Windows, HK__…. etc.) and remove the registry folder that contains the same 8-digit #…

Hope this helps! Thanks for everyone that posted their ideas/solutions!

I have a question. Im pretty sure that i got rid Total Security on my computer but for some reason, Its blocking every website i try and go onto. For exmaple, i would go into facebook or some something and it would block it and say this website may contain malacious virouses or whatever an your computer is unpretected. Anyone have any idea whats goin on?

    Luciana Reply:

If you’re sure you’ve deleted everything related to Total Security, the messages you receive must be delivered by browser hijacker or adware. Run antispyware scan to deal with these infections.

    Jim Reply:

I had same problem> I hit ctrl alt delte to open task mgr as soon as computer powered up and got it open before Total security started and then went to processes and shut down everything that looked like it could be total security. That worked and now I’m running malware bytes to clean out system. The mere fact I could start malware bytes is a triumph I figure as I could not do so before. I also had the procexpl program on a flash drive and ran that and did not see any thing that looked like TS running so I think I got it. I’m still going to run malware bytes about 10 times folloed by spybot S&d and avg etc etc.

Ok, for review, I could not start up in safe mode. I could not open any application except Internet Explorer, therefore I could not run a system restore. How I fixed it. Boot from XP cd rom. Select install XP. Don’t panic, this won’t overwrite your entire disk unless you have some other serious problem, and then you are toast anyway. After you have selected install, you can then select to repair XP. This will reinstall XP from the CD rom. Your other applications and data will remain uneffected. Keep in mind that the Total Security Malware remains. Once this is finished (I had to do this twice to get XP sufficiently repaired to boot in safe mode), reboot in safe mode. Purchase and download a malware removal program. Run it at least twice to clean up the malware. Reboot in normal mode. Make sure your antivirus/firewall/antispyware/antimalware product is up to date. Run Windows Update go get all of the updates you have now lost (service pack 3, etc.) Run the antimalware program again while you are at lunch to make sure nothing remains. Back in business.

  39. Matt

i have discovered you can overload total security by pressing CTRL ALT Del really fast about 15 times. it will shut it self down and you can then open programs to remove it

  40. Douglas Gross

The winsource.dll file is now being installed as iehelpmod.dll, as I discovered today when fixing a client’s problem with this trojan.

  41. Sasha

I have it since 2 days ago… Its affecting my computer a little bit, but I know it won’t hold much longer. I dont know how to delete this, I’m going to try all these suggestions, but it is all way to hard. It is already blocking my Internet, I tried to ignore it, but now that I read this, ignoring it wont make it better. How do I delete this, do I still have time?

  42. Sarah Fillman

I was wondering how you could put your computer in safe mode?

    Luciana Reply:

Restart your computer and keep clicking F8 key while the machine is still booting. You’ll see the option to start a computer in a safe mode.

  43. Ammonite

    Luciana,

Some users have safe mode disabled by a new variant.
I was given a laptop that could not enter safe mode due to the infection as many of the posts above stated.
I used an Ubuntu 9.04 Live DVD to enter the windows partition and deleted the folder in “document and settings” “all users” that had a name like “745663234″.
I also deleted all dll’s in the system32 folder that were recent additions.
I also deleted a folder in “Program Files” named “PersonAV” which looked suspicious. I then booted in windows and was now able to run Process Explorer” and MalwareBytes.
This took less than a hour to clean. I got Ubuntu from Borders Magazine section BTW you can download it for free if you have another computer.

  44. MattS

For anyone who can’t open task manager or reboot in safe mode: Go into your system32 folder, find task manager (taskmgr) and rename it iexplore then you should be able to open task manager and terminate the program so that you can run any program you need.

I thought I had removed the virus several times however it comes back within a day.

Once I end the process, I run full scans on updated versions of Ad-Aware, MBAM, and Spyware Doctor which I bought just for this virus because every site recommended it. They each usually find a list of problems and then fix them. I use these programs a few times each until they stop detecting anything at all.

When I restart my computer it is perfectly fine, running fast and no signs of the virus. But within hours it is back again, in full force. I have done this a number of times in different conditions yet it keeps coming back even when all three programs have taken care of everything they picked up.

    What should I do?

  45. jack

i was a victim of this spyware yesterday and i have windows vista and all applications can’t open what can i do i can’t find task manager plz any hel

    Luciana Reply:

You should be able to use Task Manager in a safe mode. You can also run antispyware program and let it do the job for you.

    MattS Reply:

What I have found with this virus, at least in my case, is that it won’t let you run ANY antispyware program nor will it let you reboot in safe mode until you are able to terminate it.

    MattS Reply:

If it won’t let you reboot in safe mode like I couldn’t, you can find task manager in C:\WINDOWS\system32

It should be an icon of a computer monitor and be found as taskmgr. Rename it to iexplore and you should be able to launch it to temporarily terminate Total Security and you will have access to all your programs again. Don’t forget to rename it back to taskmgr.

  46. MattS

Again, I thought I had successfully removed this virus but it managed to come back. Any thoughts on reformatting XP? I plan on backing up all my files and then completely reformatting XP. Anyone know if this would be effective or not?

Thank’s for helping. My computer is working now. Bad file winsourse.dll changed to iehelpmod.dll. I found iehelpmod.dll and just when I was about to delete it to do something else for a second I looked back and it changed names or it disappeared. I didn’t gave up. And now my computer is up and running
after I deleted some file that appeared there the day my computer got the pesky virus a couple days ago. I went to registry
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run) Thank God there are dates when files appear. Thanks Sean with his solution #4. I forgot how I got there but I did see HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE I got happy and deleted the file a file that appeared the day my pc got the virus, It had many numbers with a few mixed letters in it. I checked to see the contents and it had lots of weird numbers and letters with a little blue icon next to it. It had many. I deleted that folder. Before this I followed most of the other steps too. QUICK FIX>>>>>okay guys ..i no this TOTAL SECUIRTY thing is a REAL pain..i got it lastnight and yes it installed itself onto my pc..
i followed the steps as mentioned above to rename taskmgr and i needed permission to do so ..so all i did was copy taskmgr onto my desktop( can also do this by sending it to desktop by clicking right button on taskmgr and sending to desktop)
    then i renamed it iexplore
then i went to processes and went to tsc.exe and clicked on end process
( i have read that if yo see and numbers following .exe to delete them aswell eg 10493204.exe )

then i restarted my computer and pressed f8 as it was restarting so that i could get it to safe mode

on safe mode i downloaded two anti-virus programs spyware doc and malware bytes anti-malware

malware bytes was the first one i downloaded , it identified malicious software but didnt do anything to get rid of them
whereas spyware doc amazingly deleted TOTAL SECURity software

at the end of downloading the spyware doc i noticed the quick launch button to TOTAL SPYWARE had vanished and explorer had no restrictions

i also wnt to my C drive and went to system 32 and then looked for nething under TS and deleted it

    HOPE THIS HELPS GUYS!!!

I had the virus on my pc before. I was advised to request an activation code, which I did. I entered the activation code and then was able to delete the program. This time however, I requested an activation code and have not been sent one. Now, any navigation on the pc at all resets the pc itself. I dont know at this point if I can even get to this website to download the program to remove the Total Security virus. Any other suggestions?
