How to remove Smart Defender Pro
Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 at 5:35 amSmart Defender Pro description
Smart Defender Pro is the latest “version” of Virus Remover Professional fraud. SmartDefender Pro is a rogue security tool just like its predecessor.
Smart Defender Pro is distributed in fraudulent ways. It is installed secretly by Vundo and other trojans (learn how to remove Vundo trojan). SmartDefenderPro is also promoted on several fraudulent websites.
When installed, Smart DefenderPro displays fabricated security alerts and system scan reports to make an image of a functional anti-spyware program. It is not actually able to scan a computer or to detect infections. Smart Defender Pro itself is a malware.

I know the manual removal may look complicated. There’s another way to remove Smart Defender Pro too. You can run anti-spyware scan. I recommend Spyware Doctor, but you can find other security tools on other websites.

I’m with Beth. I don’t know what you mean by website either.
I have McAfee Firewall, Automatic Updates and Virus Protection. Will any of them remove Smart Defender Pro? Is there a cost for Spyware Doctor?
I’m glad to know I’m not the only person who fell for this. I thought it was a message from Windows Security Center. I immediately removed it from my Programs list but continue to get pop-ups every few minutes.
Thank you for any help. – Teddie

McAfee is not meant to deal with fraudulent programs such as Smart Defender Pro. You need antispyware to delete infections like this. Spyware Doctor is paid, but you can use the free version to locate malicious files and delete them manually when you know where the files are located.

My pop-ups disappeared on Sunday, July 18! I don’t know why. I did not run an anti-spyware scan. Sunday morning I ran a third McAfee security scan. I left the scan running with pop-ups while I was at church. When I came home, a message on the computer said something like, “Restart computer to protect it.” I restarted it, and the pop-ups were gone. The Windows Defender icon, with a red X on it, was at the bottom of my screen.
Before I found this Web site and posts, I tried everything the Help menu suggested to block pop-ups. Maybe it just took one more scan after I checked everything. I made sure Windows Defender was turned on, but I assumed it was not doing any good. Now the Windows Defender icon comes and goes at the bottom of the screen.
I don’t know what happened but thought you would be interested.

Thanks for your help with the manual removal instructions. It worked! and was very easy. I did not want to download another application on my computer and the other sites offering help with removing Smart Defender Pro required downloading their application. How do I know if they weren’t frauds trying to load another virus onto my computer?
Your instructions were detailed and the best. Thanks Again!
