The problems you’re experiencing are caused by Privacy Center so apparently it’s still on board your computer. Have you tried deleting the infection using manual removal guide? Running anti-spyware scan is also a great option in this case.

I have privacy center and i think i deleted or by logging on by safe boot then deleting the program under add or remove files in control panel. It seemed to work, the window did not pop up or anything, but when I tried to use the internet it would still not work, saying that it couldn’t allow me to access the Internet because I may have a virus or my computer may be affected. It also says at the bottom of google that I needed to update privacy center or something like that but it won’t let me go any further. Any help?

If you find the manual removal too complicated, remove the infection using anti-spyware tools. You can download Spyware Doctor on this website and you can find other antispyware programs on other sources.

for those who cannot access the ‘task manager’ this is how i did it…
click on the website listed on the bottom left of the pcenter to get onto the internet.
My firefox opened up but i could not access google or anything so i went to
-’tools’
-’options’
-’advanced’
- then click settings on how firefox access the internet
- mine had a proxy setting which it shouldnt so click ‘no proxy’

hopefully you should now be able to access google.

Okay, I’m 14… I dunno how this got here but, I’ve downloaded lots of stuff… can’t follow the manual removal. Am I supposed to end the process ‘pc.exe’ off of the task manager first before I run the programs.
P.S. i REALLY cannot follow the manual instructions… they’re too confusing.

Thanks Davida for your step by step process of how to remove the PCentre malware. It worked straight away. I did however find the shortcut to Pcentre on my desktop when I restarted my computer, after I followed your process. I have a registry scanner on my computer which I used and after restarting my computer again after scanning it, it disappeared. I hope that was the last of it……:D

One process I found that was not it your process, as I am not that greatest on the computer, was to press open on the unistall file after step 8.

Boot your computer in a safe mode and you should be able to use the manual removal or anti-spyware tools.

Many of the above help UNLESS you cannot get into Windows because of this thing
I have managed to get rid of Privacy Center, which was preventing ANY access to Windows.I stopped it with Task Manager, then used New Task to do a Restore. I typed in c:\windows\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe, which allowed the restore. Add/remove did not fully remove the files (or shortcut) leaving 3 meg in a folder called PC in Programs. I deleted those, looked through the register and deleted a couple of references to PC.exe. Many of the files suggested have now changed in this latest version. Don’t forget to turn off Restore temporarily to clear any copies that have been backed up

I got an hp pavilion from a friend and privacy center locked me out of my computer saying that i need to pay to renew the licenses. i cant get out of the screen and i dont know how to get rid of it. the computer is no longer under warranty and hp wants 50 something dollars to fix it over the phone. what can i do?

I have just been working on an XP PC which could not be accessed in normal or safe mode because of Privacy Center, so I could not use the removal processes detailed above.
Fortunately I have a maintenance disk that I can boot from which gives access to the file system. I used this and went to C:\Program Files\ and there was a subdirectory called PCenter containing files from the list in the manual deletion instructions above. I completely deleted this directory, and now the PC boots OK.
Now I can make sure that all traces of Privacy Center are deleted by using normal and-virus and anti-spyware tools.

Pam, boot your PC in a safe mode, this way Privacy Center has much less access to the system and you should be able to remove the infection either manually or by running antispyware scan.

My PC accidentally got infected by Privacy center. That did not allow me to boot to desktop. Soon I login the, privacy centers app would pop up and show all the cookies as either dangerous or porn . But after sometime, it would throw “No sufficient disk space to run the task” and the process would stall . I dint allow me to get to desktop.
I tried to boot in safe mode, but the password dint work. I tried “administrator” as well to log in , but failed.
So , here is what worked for me. I changed the boot sequence to boot from CD. Put in ubuntu boot cd and ran it without installing it. Once ubuntu boots, mount the drive that has windows ( Places-> IBM reload ( c:) ) and went to Program files and deleted the folder PCenter.
Now i shutdown from ubuntu and try normall winows boot. It allowed me to get to desktop.
Then , i cleaned up the registry and i am all set.

Pam- It looks like the privacy center heads of state are monitoring this site and getting ideas to make the malware more robust. Seems only lately that ctrl-alt-del function is being disabled after privacy center takes hold. I’m sure this problem has occurred more often than what we see on this site but I’m wondering why I haven’t yet seen it reported in the news media.

The same thing has happened to me. As soon as i switch on the computer, privacy center is up, and my ctrl-alt-delete is ‘disabled’. I can’t get onto task manager, or go onto ’safe mode’, and how am i meant to do an anti-scan if i can’t even get out of the privacy center screen. The anti scan wouldn’t work anyway, if the virus protector could stop the virus in the scan, then it wouldn’t have let it in in the first place. Please help.

Ok Ive gone through untill I get to step seven. What happens is when i try to find “Privacy centre” in the list of “program files” in the “c:” drive, I cannot uninstall it becasue “Privacy Centre” is not on the list ??? please help

Right ive got this very problem

things i cant do

control alt delete…… task manger is disabled the button is shaded and i cant click it

ok i have the same problem but also a bigger one too.i cant open task manager because it sais that is not allowed from administratos and i do not have 2 windows profile…..should i just format and reinstall windiows

Privacy Center won’t appear on the “Add/Remove programs” list because PrivacyCenter is not a regular program. You can either delete it manually or you can run antispyware scan. Well, you can also format hard drive and reinstall Windows but you lose your files in this case. I recommend using step-by-step removal guide provided above the comments section.

I really hope you can help me out. I have the same exact virus as you, but I am unfamiliar with DOS prompts. I am capable with a computer, so if you explain how to do it I will have no problem following. I know this is a lot to ask, but could you give me a step-by-step on how you changed directory to c:\windows so I can get to add/remove programs and delete this virus? It would really help me out because I have some important files on there. Thank you so much.

I found a simple way to delete it.

After I would log on, privacy center would come up and would not allow me to do anything either. so i did the following….

1 start Task Manager while privacy center was running,(Ctrl + Alt + Delete)
2 Click on processes tab ( its the second tab next to application tab)
3 locate file pc.exe, click on it, then click on (End Process) tab bottom
4 Click on (Applications)tab
5 click on (New Task)tab then click (Browse)button
6 then click on (c:)then (Program files)
7 Find Privacy Centre then click on that.
8 Then click on the uninstall file.

Thanks it.

Then reboot and it should work. It did for me.

boot to safe mode
press CTRL -ALT-DEL (the screen may be modifyed by the virus to be opbscured to one side. Expand it in this case.. End the only task listed…

to fix the black screen from here..

click on new task and type “explorer”

this should continue windows into a normal “safe mode” desktop

I have the same problem, HOWEVER, simply use the TaskManager to end that process. I booted my computer and it wouldnt allow me to see my desktop, I simply pressed CTRL + ALT + DELETE, Ended the task, and i could access my desktop.

I tried the manual uninstall but the processes to end were not listed. The registry entry’s to be deleted were not in the registry to be deleted. also none of the files to be deleted were found on the computer. Are there other registry entry’s and files used for privacy center ?
