Desktop Defender 2010 description
Desktop Defender 2010 is a rogue program pretending to be a security tool. It’s easy to mistake the malware for a real anti-spyware since it’s installed secretly by trojans. It looks like it is part of Windows operating system because it appears out of nowhere and it claims to be a spyware remover.
DesktopDefender2010 is no better than its earlier variants: Unvirex and Contraviro. It brings a bunch of harmless files onboard and then it reports the same files as dangerous infections. It constantly displays annoying pop-ups urging people to buy DesktopDefender 2010 for deleting the fake threats. Desktop Defender2010 may cause more trouble to push people into paying for this fraudulent program.

I ended up with a program called Total PC Defender 2010, which looks identical to the Desktop Defender 2010 snapshot you have above (with the exception of the name). This program has taken total control of my computer. I can’t access anything except the internet in a round-about way. The PC Defender window is the only thing that shows up on my screen and it won’t let me close it. Please advise how to remove. I can’t follow your manual removal instructions because I can’t access anything on my computer and I’m leary of downloading anything at this point for fear of paying for something that doesn’t work.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I can be reached via email because my email gets forwarded to my Blackberry.
Thanks,
Steve

Click here to remove Total PC Defender 2010. You should be able to use the manual removal guide once you boot your PC in a safe mode.

I had a similar one that completely shut off my access to my computer. Running it regularly or in Safe mode didn’t make any difference. There is no start menu, you can’t ctrl-alt-delete, and there’s just no way to do anything. I tried some clever tricks, but nothing worked. Eventually, I discovered how to get around it. One time I started it in safe mode with cmd. I have a user password screen, so I typed in my password. The instant I was logged in, I hit ctrl-alt-delete, and it worked. Apparantly the program didn’t have time to take effect.
So, I was able to get the task manager open, with the cmd open as well. I still didn’t have the explorer, so no start menu or anything, but I had the cmd so I could manually open things. Strangely enough, the program never did start, so I never had to end the process. My first course of action was deleting directory stuff. I tried to edit the registry but couldn’t find any of the files, so eventually I restarted my computer.
My computer loaded normally. The Defender was still there a bit; after a minute a little thing pops into the bottom right corner says “Blah blah”, but when you exit it out, a notice informs me the application couldn’t initialize, which is a good sign.
So currently I’m trying to get this thing off of my computer for good. Good luck to you, hopefully my method will at least give you access to your computer.

I had received this problem before but was fortunate enough to restart my machine a do a simple system restore. The next time it hit my computer, I quickly disconnected the network and restarted the machine. System restore was no longer an option. I downloaded the new Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from another computer and installed it using my thumbdrive. It found the rogue registries and fixed my computer.

Seconding John Doe on the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware…the initial scan-and-fix is free and fixed my computer after it was infected with Desktop Defender 2010.
A question, though…I have Norton Internet Security and regularly run full system scans (I’m paranoid now) to check for any suspicious activity. Will it be able to tell if any residual Desktop Defender applications are still in my computer and fix them? And can Desktop Defender permanently harm something in my PC? I resolved the issue pretty quickly (a couple hours after the fact) and luckily, I didn’t seem to have it as hardcore as some people have.

I’ve downloaded Malwarebytes but each time I try to scan the computer, that program freezes up, usually about 45 minutes into the scanning. Please advise?

This happens when antispyware attempts to delete file that is currently in use and can’t be terminated. Try running antispyware scan in a safe mode or use the manual removal guide.

Problem resolved. I selected “quick scan” instead and kept an eye on it. The annoying pop ups are now gone, but will go back manually to make sure all has been removed. Thank you for the advice.

Stopping malicious processes is not enough, you also need to delete files installed by Desktop Defender 2010. Use the manual removal guide on this page; first stop the malicious processes, then delete DesktopDefender registry entries, then unregister DLL libraries and then delete the files. It’s all explained on the tutorial.

Here’s detailed tutorial on how to unregister DLL files. Once you’re done with that, you can delete the files just like the others.

I also had the problem of not seeing my task bar and not being able to get to the windows explorer. In vista, I was able to start the Task manager from Ctrl-Alt-Del From there, I stopped the Desktop Defender application and then went to the services tab and selected the services button – which took me to the services screen. Then I changed the startup type for security center from disabled to automatic and started the security center service. That got me to the Windows security center screen which has an option to backup and restore in the lower left corner. Hoeever, instead of doing the restore, I navigated to the c:\ drive from this path bar at top and was able to delete Desktop Defender directory in the c:\program files directory and reboot. Once I rebooted, I got my computer back and ran the removal tool. Last time I google for Mustang GT sites. Sheesh!

I think this is the same problem i am having. I tried to uninstall and run my virus software. Then my computer rebooted….and it keeps rebooting up to safe mode/safe mode with networking/safe mode with command prompt/last know configuration/start windows normally. If i chose any of them…my computer automatically reboots…is there anything that can be done now?

I got this and it ended in a black screen tried the malware removal tool and this one but they only got me part infected..if you can alt-control-delete you can hit new task and type explorer to get to your home page that was the only way i was able to continue…still have issues, so far nothings helped and the reg keys are not listed so I dont know what to do now….
